If you have a child in school, you are probably aware of how important sight words can be. They are the first major words that are focused on and as the name infers you should recognize them just by seeing them. These words should not have to be sounded out.  I have a 9 year old who is still struggling. He can sound out words that you should know in middle school, but can’t pick up on some of the sight words for some reason.

When I was given the opportunity to review Rock ‘N Learn’s Sight Words DVD I was rather excited. We have tried many things in the past few years to help and as with any kid, it is difficult to keep a child’s attention when they are bored or don’t understand. I showed him the video on youtube before it actually arrived and he showed a little interest. So when it arrived, I put it in the DVD player and we all sat to watch it (my one year old just loves music so I knew he wouldn’t mind!) The movie actually kept BOTH of their attention the entire length of the movie. Not only was it interesting enough for him to actually pay attention, but I noticed him reading along and even singing the songs. He loves the fact that the words are put to music as well as how they are animated. One of the songs uses the words up and down. As they are singing up the spaceship is going up the stairs and when they are singing down, it goes down. The songs are definitely very catchy as well and I even caught myself singing along while washing the dishes! I also love the fact that the words are written on the screen and even highlighted as they are being read or sung in a song. Between this highlighting and the repetitive, yet fun, techniques used in this DVD it will be a great learning tool in my house and one I would definitely recommend to other parents of young children. I also love that once my oldest no longer needs it, I will still be able to save it and use it with my younger son when he is ready to start reading! I can’t wait to check out other DVD’s from the Rock ‘N Learn collection!
