We are big syrup people in my house. Nothing is better then a nice steaming hot pile of pancakes or french toast covered in syrup. We use flavored syrups in everything from milk to ice cream toppings and even in smoothies. So when I was given the chance to review Wholesome Sweeteners line of Agave syrups I was all for it. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I have never had agave in anything other than tequila. I just knew there was no way the two could even remotely taste the same!
Agave is a plant that is grown primarily in Mexico and can be used many different ways. Wholesome Sweeteners uses the nectar from the blue agave to create their decadent syrups. Agave is sweeter than honey but thinner and less sticky (yes, i did a little research because I had to know!) It all sounded appealing.. so how did the actual syrup live up to my expectations?
I was rather impressed. I received a package that contained their organic raw blue agave syrups in multiple flavors. These flavors included cinnamon, maple, strawberry, and vanilla along with the basic blue agave syrup. I started with the agave syrup just to get a basic understanding of the flavor. It is very unique. I can’t say it was the best thing I had ever tasted, but it wasn’t bad. If you are expecting a sweet, sugary syrup it’s definitely not. It is more like a thin, natural honey flavor that has a slight bitter sweet taste. I know this sounds weird, but I actually thought it was pretty good paired with chicken. The cinnamon was next and that most definitely sticks to its flavor. If you are a lover of real cinnamon, this is perfect! It has that spicy bite with the sweet aftertaste. Pretty good on many pastries and I even enjoyed it in my coffee. My husband insisted on the maple being next. That was his favorite and he has definitely eaten most of the bottle! He says heated up with a tiny bit of butter and it is perfect. I was a huge fan of the vanilla syrup. It had a smooth vanilla nut taste and almost a buttery aftertaste that I found delightful. Lastly was the strawberry. I wasn’t sure of that one at first and took a couple tries before deciding it was ok. It has a very strong strawberry flavor. And I don’t mean that fake strawberry.. more like right off the vine, smashed, and added to the syrup type flavor. It makes a decent ice cream topping thought I have used it more as an addition to a breakfast smoothie. Overall I was very pleased with the syrups. They are definitely not the typical taste, but once you give it a try the unique flavor will win you over.
I wanted to add a quick recipe to this post that I used my Wholesome sweeteners products to make! Hope you enjoy.
6-8 slices of 2 day old bread (not sure why, but I have always heard it works best this way so I stick to it!)
3 large eggs
1tsp Wholesome Sweeteners Vanilla flavored organic blue agave syrup
1/2 cup of milk or half and half
2 tbsp of Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Sucanat
Toppings- Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Powdered Sugar, Maple, Vanilla, or Cinnamon raw blue agave syrups
Heat a skillet to medium heat. Lightly grease pan with butter or cooking oil. In a bowl big enough to lay bread flat, combine the eggs, milk, vanilla agave syrup, and sucanat and mix well. Dip bread slices into egg mixture and allow to absorb and coat the bread. Lay them flat in the skillet and cook until both sides are golden browned, turning as needed. Serve hot topped with flavored syrup of your choice. I also love to add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to mine!
